Engine and Engine Cooling recall

20V-064
February 6, 2020 · Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing
Problem
Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing (Toyota) is recalling certain 2020 Toyota Avalon Hybrid, Camry, Camry Hybrid and Lexus ES300h and 2019-2020 RAV4 and RAV4 Hybrid vehicles equipped with 2.5L 4-Cylinder engines. Porosity in the engine castings may result in cracks than can allow coolant to leak internally and/or externally.
Safety risk
A coolant leak can cause the engine to overheat and cause a vehicle stall in conventional gasoline vehicles, increasing the risk of a crash. Additionally, for all involved vehicles, the engine may get damaged mechanically, possibly resulting in an engine oil leak, increasing the risk of a fire.
Remedy
Toyota will notify owners, and dealers will inspect and replace the engine including the engine block, as necessary, free of charge. The recall began April 3, 2020. Owners may contact Toyota customer service at 1-888-270-9371 or Lexus at 1-800-255-3987. Toyota's number for this recall is 20TA04. Lexus' number for this recall is 20LA02.

The "airbag malfunction" light keeps coming on and off warning that there's something wrong with the airbags or the system itself. It's actually for something they have recalls for but my VIN number doesn't show up for the recall. It says "SRS airbag system malfunction".

September 23, 2026Fuel/Propulsion System

While fixing another problem, I pulled the codes from the ECM and found several P0087 (low fuel rail pressure). The problem was apparently intermittent and if the engine service light came on, it was transient and the light cleared. So neither my wife or I noticed an engine service light. I did some research and found that Denso found and reported a problem with the in tank fuel pump design to the NTSB in Feb. of 2020. We purchased the Camry in Dec. 2019 which meant we had the defective fuel pump. I ordered a new Denso fuel pump and install it and no new codes have appeared in the ECM log. Apparently Toyota has been slowly adding more years to the recall, but hasn't yet added the 2020 model
